At Bats
The At Bats technique sounds simple and it’s probably the most useful when it comes to increasing student participation, building confidence and building skill. The At Bat technique is the idea that students need practice over and over. Some may learn the skill for good the third time while others need to practice it ten times. Very few learn it the first or even the second time. Kids understand what is expected of them and the repetition is an important part of their routine. Some kids take a lot more At Bats than others but, needless to say, this technique has proven to make kids successful.
I use this technique a lot in my classroom. I use it for reading fluency daily, for practicing math facts, practicing behavior, and for read aloud activities.
