Nearing the End

So as we get nearer to the end of the school year, I am certain that my students also realize that the end is near. :) We've had lots of behaviors popping up that hadn't been an issue before. I went back to last months chapter and reviewed a little to remind myself that those techniques do work. Now, the time and staff to implement them...

I have a little girl that I had to send home last week due to her hitting, spitting, screaming, and blatant refusal to follow any sort of directions. Her mom called me at 6:37 this morning on my cell phone and said that she had a great weekend...until she put her on the bus this morning. So, I prepped for the worst. And it happened. :( She came in screaming, hitting, and stomping on other children. I happened to have one student absent today, so I took that time to work with this one student one on one. I rearranged my schedule and my staffs so that I could always be in the room with her. Focusing on having her "do it again" and giving "no warnings" I was able to have her in class and not disrupting other students for a full three hours (and then I took my break) I was very consistent with her and every time she yelled "poop" or "shut up" or walked by and hit a staff member, we tried again. I'm hoping that we'll be able to continue being so strict with her and see some improvements in behavior by the end of the school year. It's very difficult when I don't have the staff to pull her out every time though. :(

  1. Wow! You are amazing. I am so glad to work with someone as patient as you. Yes, I notice some of my students acting more difficult than usual as well because of the end of the year approaching. However, there are some that seem to amaze me. I took down a poster the other, since I am going to be switching rooms, I thought I would do a little at a time, and a few kids were like "Why are you taking it down?" I reminded them we had only like 13 days left and they seemed flabbergasted. They had no clue. Funny.

  2. Kari - wow! Way to stick with her! Have you thought about any kind of behavior check in to get her through the end of the year? I know we're done with Cougar Slips at my school and even though we weren't using them much, it's kind of sad to have some kind of incentive end since you can't fall back on it.

Lori - that is great! I am sure thinking about all the fun you'll have in kinder is kind of distracting? ;)
