NEW YEAR! NEW FOCUS!

This year the book we are exploring is "Focus: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning" by Mike Schmoker.

This book is designed for teachers to reevaluate the focus of their instruction and the curriculum involved.

It will help participants raise the level of their instruction by working on the following areas: The importance of simplicity, clarity and priority; content, instruction, and literacy in the content area.

I look forward to hearing about how this book impacts instruction and ultimately student achievement.

But I will start with a more philosophical question...

What is your focus?

  1. While I am not taking this class for credit, I have it on my kindle and plan on reading along with you. My focus this year is a bit more simplicity and making concepts more clear. I just was at the Marcia Tate conference and am pumped up about repetition across the curriculum. We need to give kids many opportunities with concepts to really cement them.

  3. My focus this year is improving my kids literacy skills. When I came into the district last year, it was really surprising to me that most of my students hadn't been able to attend a preschool or pre-k program and therefore they were substantially behind already where I would have expected them to be. Now that I have a better understanding of the population and the missing skills that need to be taught first early in the year, I hope to get my kids farther in reading and writing than I was able to last year.
