Getting Ready for the End!

Believe it or not...

There are less than 35 days left in the school year.....

There are only full, five day, weeks until the furlough day before Memorial Day weekend.....

The weather is getting nicer and students are getting antsy.....

And so are the teachers!

I don't remind you of all these things to discourage you, but rather to inspire you to use more of the strategies that will help engage students and combat the forces that would strive to derail us from our endeavors.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is this....
Engage yourself, engage your students, finish this marathon with grace and aplomb!

And then, tell us how you did it!

  1. As students are getting done with assessments/other things, I am trying to find some engaging, authentic projects that will help them stay engaged and working on skills (not just a math workbook or silent reading) but not be grading intensive (i.e. the learning is its own reward).

Thoughts, other than finishing Oregon Trail simulation:

    * Farm project - apply what they know about area, perimeter, and multiplication to lay out a farm; further steps include calculating income based on (made up) prices of vegetables/dozens of eggs/etc.

    * Create a board game - have students come up with questions related to 4th grade skills with a generic 'Candyland' kind of board game, then play it.

    * Create a new book jacket to go with any book report speech they need to give before the end of the year.

    * Brown bag speech (stolen from my mentor) where students explain 3 important (non-living) objects from home that come to school in the bag

    * Full of knowledge - create a body cut out and fill it out in groups with things they've learned

    * Complete fictional narratives that were started earlier in the year, share out

    * Partner read chapter books, stick note summaries
